"I have taken this for 4 days now. The first and second days were difficult; I took them prior to breakfast and eating, which resulted in nausea. My husband recommended taking them after I had more food in my stomach and since evenings are my hardest times to not eat, it only made sense to take it after lunch. I now just take one pill after lunch. It does make me a little anxious and makes my head feel light, but my husband (who played college football) said that it takes up to 2 weeks for the initial side-effects to diminish, so I’m going to keep giving it a try. There was an interesting and rather troubling article in the UK Telegraph recently titled "Obesity is Contagious as Fat Friends Make You Feel Normal" by published on Sunday May 8, 2011. The teaser sentence stated: "Obesity is contagious - with people who have a higher number of fat friends or relatives at a greater risk of becoming obsess themselves, warns new research."
Now then, this research does make sense, and perhaps none of us are too surprised by the results or the empirical data on this research, but it certainly is something to think about. Does this mean we should dump all of our friends who are overweight? After all, perhaps another study could be done about those folks who are overweight and obese who have lots of skinny friends. Maybe it helps them to watch their diets to lose weight to look like their friends.
So what's the right ratio? Should people who are too skinny have friends who are regular, and maybe a couple of obese to friends? Should folks who are Obese have more skinny friends? Should every group of in shape and skinny humans have one friend who is obese or overweight? If so, that might help the obese person lose weight, and remind this skinny people that if they don't watch what they eat they might someday look like them.
There are concerns and issues in this dilemma. Yes, maybe this topic is to politically incorrect for anyone to even consider, and therefore we are all doomed to gain weight for failure to address these concerns and consider what to do about it? Now then, if this study is correct and it is easier to become overweight when we have lots of obese Friends, then we need to know this, not necessarily to limit our overweight friends, but to realize that it is no excuse for allowing ourselves to become out of shape.
Most of us have friends or family who are perhaps a little overweight. Nevertheless, the more friends we have who are overweight, the more it typically makes us feel good about ourselves for being thin, or at least in better shape. However, that can easily cause someone to not worry as they gain a few extra pounds, which can cause them to develop poor eating habits, or not take their exercising seriously. This indeed puts them at risk of becoming overweight or obese also.
